Mount Meru, in Arusha National Park, is the fifth-highest mountain in Africa at 4,565 m. The Momella Route is the most popular, with a gradual ascent through rainforest, heath and alpine desert, a chance to see wildlife such as elephants, buffaloes, monkeys and birds, and stunning views. This compressed 3-day version reaches the summit and descends to Momella Gate on the final day; the 4-day version is gentler.

    Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

    Hike through rainforest and heath zones to Miriakamba Hut (2,700 m) for the night.

    Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

    Continue through heath and moorland zones up to Saddle Camp (3,820 m) with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

  3. Day 3

    Summit Day: Saddle to Meru Summit and down to Momella Gate

    Begin the summit push before dawn to reach the summit (4,565 m) at sunrise. Descend to Saddle camp and then continue down to Momella Gate and transfer back to Arusha or Moshi.
